LBCC's Accelerated 8-Week Courses Empower Students to Balance Education and Life

Long Beach City College is transforming higher education by expanding its accelerated 8-week courses, helping students manage work, family, and school more effectively.

As of August 2024, these fast-track courses make up half of all LBCC classes, offering the same rigorous material in half the time and allowing students to concentrate on fewer subjects at once.

Academic success rates have surged, especially among Black and African American students and adult learners.

Subjects like math, engineering, and family and consumer studies see stronger outcomes in 8-week formats, while equity gaps have narrowed across Black, Latinx, Asian, and Filipino student communities.

LBCC also supports student achievement through initiatives like the Center of Black Student Excellence, providing programs and counseling tailored to affirm identities and foster educational growth.

The college’s flexible course models continue to reshape access and opportunity for the diverse Long Beach community.

Immigrants File Lawsuit Over Conditions at California's Largest ICE Detention Center

Seven immigrants have filed a federal lawsuit against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), alleging severe neglect and inhumane treatment at the California City Immigration Processing Center.

The detainees report facing unsanitary living conditions, including sewage leaks and insect infestations, inadequate medical care, and barriers to legal assistance.

Many describe being kept in freezing cells without enough clothing, enduring poor hygiene, and being isolated for long periods due to frequent lockdowns.

Some detainees lack access to basic hygiene products like soap, and report weight loss because of insufficient meals.

The facility, managed by private contractor CoreCivic, currently holds around 800 people, though it was built for more than 2,500.

This case highlights wider concerns over detainee treatment in private immigration centers and growing calls for stricter oversight.
