Long Beach Teen Triumphs Over Spinal Injury, Walks Out of Hospital to Cheers |
15-Year-Old Athlete's Determination Leads to Remarkable Recovery After Paralyzing Accident |
Alessandro "Sandro" Apuzzo, a 15-year-old standout water polo player from Long Beach, faced a life-altering challenge this past Fourth of July.
While diving at Peninsula Beach, he struck his head on a sandbar, resulting in severe spinal injuries that left him temporarily paralyzed.
After four months of intensive rehabilitation at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital, Sandro achieved what many thought impossible.
On November 26, 2025, he walked out of the hospital, greeted by the enthusiastic cheers of family, friends, medical staff, and the very lifeguards who had rescued him.
Reflecting on the support he received, Sandro expressed, "To see all the people who supported me, it's awesome. It just really makes me happy."
His journey from paralysis to mobility is a testament to his unwavering determination and the comprehensive care provided by his medical team.
Dr. Kimberly BeDell, Medical Director of Pediatric Rehabilitation, noted, "He suffered three burst fractures of his cervical spine. He had an incomplete quadriplegia."
She emphasized that Sandro's athletic background played a crucial role in his recovery.
His father, Jose Santos Loria, shared his amazement: "His recovery in the last month has been absolutely crazy. It's amazing. It is Thanksgiving, so I can say... thank you to this community for all the support that we have received."
While Sandro's progress is remarkable, his journey isn't over.
Doctors anticipate at least six more months of therapy.
However, his outlook remains positive.
He looks forward to returning to the activities he loves, stating, "I hope to get back to doing what I love, being in the water, surfing, bodyboarding, all of that."
His story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit and the power of community support.
As the holiday season approaches, events like the upcoming Long Beach VA Christmas Party on December 9, 2025, organized by the Triumph Foundation, aim to bring joy and support to those facing challenges similar to Sandro's.
These gatherings underscore the importance of community in the healing process.
For those navigating spinal injuries, resources such as the Spine Condition Support Group offer education and hope.
Hosted by Spinal Hope, this group meets monthly to provide a space for sharing experiences and coping strategies.
Sandro's journey from injury to recovery is a powerful reminder of the strength found in determination, the support of loved ones, and the expertise of dedicated medical professionals.
His story resonates deeply within the Long Beach community, offering hope and inspiration to all. |
