Woman Struck by Pickup While Crossing Long Beach Street

Tragic accident claims life of pedestrian at East Anaheim Street and Alamitos Avenue

A tragic incident unfolded late Wednesday night in Long Beach, as a 37-year-old woman lost her life after being struck by a pickup truck while crossing the street.

The accident occurred around 10:25 p.m. at the intersection of East Anaheim Street and Alamitos Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the woman lying in the roadway.

Paramedics from the Long Beach Fire Department pronounced her deceased at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the victim as Amber Mitchell, who sustained fatal blunt trauma.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, a 1997 Chevrolet Sierra was traveling westbound on East Anaheim Street when it struck Mitchell, who was crossing outside of a marked crosswalk.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Authorities stated that excessive speed, distracted driving, or impairment did not appear to be factors in the collision.

In recent years, the city has undertaken several initiatives to enhance pedestrian safety in the area.

Notably, in late 2023, construction began on Alamitos Avenue to install painted buffered bike lanes, new traffic striping, and continental crosswalk markings, aiming to improve safety for all road users.

Despite these efforts, incidents like this underscore the ongoing challenges in ensuring pedestrian safety.

Residents are urged to exercise caution when crossing streets and to use designated crosswalks whenever possible.

Anyone who may have witnessed the collision is encouraged to contact the Long Beach Police Department's Collision Investigation Detail at 562-570-7110.

Community members are also reminded to stay informed about local traffic safety initiatives and to participate in community discussions aimed at enhancing road safety for all.
