Alessandro "Sandro" Apuzzo, a 15-year-old Long Beach water polo star, faced a devastating spinal injury after a dive at Peninsula Beach left him temporarily paralyzed on July 4.

 

Following four months of dedicated rehab at Miller Children's & Women's Hospital, Sandro astonished supporters by walking out on November 26, greeted by cheers from loved ones, hospital staff, and lifeguards.

 

His recovery, from an accident that caused three burst fractures to his cervical spine, is described as nothing short of miraculous by Dr. Kimberly BeDell, who credited Sandro’s athletic discipline and community support.
